Phil Berger, the Republican leader in the North Carolina Senate, conceded defeat in the primary election held on Tuesday, losing to incumbent Sheriff Sam Page by a narrow margin of 23 votes. The unofficial results indicated that Page won with a recount confirming the close race, as he was separated from Berger by just two votes in Rockingham County.

Berger, who has been a significant figure in North Carolina politics for nearly 15 years, acknowledged the outcome in a statement expressing gratitude for the campaign and wishing Page success. Despite Donald Trump's endorsement of Berger in December, the defeat represents an unusual blemish on Trump's endorsement record, as most candidates he backed either won or advanced in their races.
