House Votes to Limit Trump's Military Powers on Iran

On Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a war powers resolution aimed at restricting President Donald Trump's military actions against Iran, passing with a vote of 214 to 208.

The resolution, introduced by Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal of Washington, requires congressional authorization for military action against Iran. Four Republicans—Tom Barrett, Brian Fitzpatrick, Warren Davidson, and Thomas Massie—joined Democrats in supporting the measure.

However, the Senate subsequently blocked a similar resolution, voting 49-47 against it. The conflict, which intensified following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, has led to bipartisan frustration, with Democrats linking the war to rising living costs and Republicans defending Trump's military actions.

Senator Tim Sheehy criticized supporters of the resolution, while Jayapal emphasized the issue's importance beyond party lines. The congressional votes occurred amid ongoing military actions, including airstrikes on Iranian targets and retaliatory attacks by Iran on U.S. military bases.
