US Military Troop Deployment Begins in Maiduguri, Nigeria

On Thursday night, US military planes landed in Maiduguri, marking the beginning of a troop deployment that will involve approximately 200 American personnel. The aircraft, primarily C-17 transport planes, are carrying intelligence analysts, advisors, and equipment.

This deployment is part of a phased operation, with additional aircraft expected over the weekend. Maj Gen Samaila Uba, Nigeria's defense spokesman, clarified that the arriving personnel are not part of combat operations and will not assume direct operational roles, as Nigerian forces retain full command.

The deployment follows recommendations from a joint US-Nigeria work group focused on advisory and technical assistance. The operation aims to enhance security communication systems and support structures alongside Nigerian counterparts.

The arrival of these personnel is part of a temporary mission to bolster counterterrorism efforts, with a steady flow of aircraft anticipated over the next several weeks. This follows increased US military air activity in West Africa, particularly in February, with multiple aircraft landing in the region.
