US Missionary Alex Barbir Expelled from Nigeria Over Speech

Alex Barbir, a US missionary, was expelled from Nigeria following a public statement that authorities believed could exacerbate insecurity in parts of the country. The decision, confirmed by Abiodun Essiet, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu, came amid growing concerns about tensions in the North Central region.

Essiet stated that Barbir's comments had begun to affect national unity and were linked to violent incidents, including the killing of two Muslims shortly after his speech. Barbir had established a significant presence in Plateau State, known for his humanitarian efforts, including rebuilding homes and providing basic infrastructure in communities affected by violence.

Despite his contributions, his remarks drew criticism from public figures and religious leaders, who warned that his words threatened public peace. The Nigerian government acted to prevent further tensions, emphasizing the need to avoid divisive narratives that could escalate conflicts.
