US and Nigeria Enhance Security Cooperation Efforts

On August 12, 2026, the United States and Nigeria conducted a review of their security cooperation, particularly regarding Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC). The session was hosted by United States Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, and included a Nigerian delegation led by National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

The discussions centered on three main areas: protecting Christian communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, enhancing accountability for violence perpetrators, and strengthening military-to-military cooperation. The meeting built on previous discussions held in Abuja on January 22, 2026.

Key topics included the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs), counterterrorism prosecutions, and combating terrorism financing. Despite progress, challenges such as civilian fatalities and transparency in humanitarian expenditures were identified.

Both nations acknowledged ongoing efforts, including the prosecution of Boko Haram and ISIS-WA suspects and the recruitment of 50,000 police officers. Further discussions on military cooperation continued at the Pentagon.
