US Introduces Two Family-Based Visa Categories for Immigrants

The US government has announced two family-based immigrant visa pathways for foreign nationals aiming for permanent residency in the United States. The first category, the Immediate Relative visa, is available for individuals with close family ties to a US citizen, such as spouses, children, and parents.

This category has no annual numerical limit, allowing an unlimited number of admissions each fiscal year. The second category, the Family Preference visa, caters to more distant family relationships with a US citizen and certain relationships with Lawful Permanent Residents.

Unlike the Immediate Relative visa, the Family Preference visa has a limited number of visas issued annually, which can lead to longer waiting periods for applicants. This distinction is particularly significant for Nigerians and other Africans seeking residency through family connections, as those qualifying as immediate relatives face fewer bureaucratic challenges due to the absence of an annual cap.
