NCC and ALTON Address Telecom Infrastructure Vandalism

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) have raised alarms regarding the ongoing vandalism of telecommunications infrastructure in Nigeria. This destruction significantly disrupts network services, leading to widespread connectivity blackouts that adversely affect millions of subscribers.

The vandalism includes theft of critical components such as power cables, fiber optic cables, diesel generators, batteries, and solar systems. The NCC, in response to the growing threat, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in 2017 to protect telecommunications facilities.

Despite these efforts, the problem persists, exacerbated by economic challenges and unpatriotic elements sabotaging government initiatives. The NCC emphasizes the need for collaboration between authorities and mobile network operators to safeguard vital infrastructure, which is crucial for the nation's digital economy and overall security.
