FIFA Introduces New Rules for 2026 World Cup Matches

FIFA has unveiled new rules aimed at enhancing the flow of matches and reducing time wastage in football ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. These changes were confirmed during the 140th annual meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) held in Wales.

Key amendments include a requirement for players to leave the pitch within 10 seconds during substitutions, with penalties for delays. Additionally, a five-second rule for throw-ins and goal kicks will be implemented to discourage time-wasting.

Injured players must leave the field for at least one minute before returning. The role of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will also expand, allowing reviews for second yellow cards and clear errors in decisions.

Pierluigi Collina, chairman of FIFA referees, stated that these measures aim to improve the overall flow of the game and ensure consistent officiating across competitions.
