Varvara Voronchikhina Wins Historic Paralympic Gold

Varvara Voronchikhina achieved a historic victory by winning Russia's first Winter Paralympic gold medal since the 2014 Sochi Games in the women's standing super-G event at the Milan Cortina Paralympics. She completed the race in 1 minute and 15.6 seconds, finishing 1.96 seconds ahead of France's Aureli Richard, who took silver, and Sweden's Ebba Aarsj, who secured bronze.

This triumph not only marks a significant achievement for Voronchikhina, who had previously won a bronze medal in downhill skiing earlier in the games, but also signifies Russia's return to the Paralympic podium after a lengthy absence due to controversies surrounding state-sponsored doping scandals and subsequent sanctions. Mikhail Degtyarev, Russia's sports minister, congratulated Voronchikhina via telegram.

Following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Russia and Belarus were excluded from the Winter Paralympics, but the International Paralympic Committee lifted the suspension in September 2023, allowing a limited number of athletes to compete.
