Venus Williams Receives 12th Wildcard for US Open

Venus Williams, the five-time Wimbledon champion, has been granted her 12th wildcard for the 2026 US Open by the United States Tennis Association (USTA). At 46 years old, she will face fellow Grand Slam champion Sofia Kenin in the first round.

Williams is currently ranked 611th in the world and has not qualified for a Grand Slam singles tournament through her ranking since Wimbledon in 2021. Her recent performance has been challenging, with 14 consecutive singles match losses, and only one victory in her last 19 matches.

Despite these struggles, tournament organizers value her participation due to her status as a recognizable figure in women's tennis. Karl Hale, tournament director of the Canadian Open, supports the decision to invite her, citing the commercial benefits and media interest her presence generates.

Williams has previously received wildcards for events in New Zealand, Australia, Spain, Germany, Canada, and the United States. The debate over her wildcards continues, as there is no limit on the number of wildcards a Grand Slam champion can receive.
