Chidimma Adetshina Faces Deportation Challenge in Court

On Monday, Chidimma Adetshina, a former Miss Universe Nigeria, encountered a hostile reception outside the Cape Town Regional Court, where she was appearing to contest the South African Department of Home Affairs' attempt to deport her. A video shared on social media showed women chanting anti-immigrant slogans as she exited the court.

This incident has sparked widespread condemnation online, with many labeling the behavior as xenophobic. Adetshina's legal troubles began in 2024 when her citizenship was questioned, leading to her withdrawal from the Miss South Africa pageant.

She was arrested last month for allegedly residing in South Africa without valid immigration status. During the recent court proceedings, her legal team successfully challenged the Department of Home Affairs' deportation bid for the time being.

The court has adjourned the matter until August 19, 2024, when a magistrate will deliver a judgment regarding her detention. Adetshina claims she was born in South Africa and has no significant ties to Nigeria.
