Ex-US Prosecutor Investigates Nigeria's Sextortion Scammers

Former United States prosecutor Erin West traveled to Nigeria to investigate suspected internet fraudsters, referred to as 'Yahoo boys,' involved in sextortion schemes targeting teenagers. Her team analyzed a phone number linked to a suspected scammer, which led to the identification of individuals involved in blackmailing young victims for explicit images.

During a video call with the suspect, West confronted him about his actions, stating, “You were pretending to be a teenage girl. You got him to send explicit images, and then you blackmailed him.” She informed the suspect that authorities had gathered extensive information about him, including his residence and associates.

West emphasized the severe consequences of these crimes, linking them to at least 60 teenage suicides. Despite providing evidence to Nigerian authorities, no arrests were made, and West noted that addressing the issue requires more than just apprehending one individual, as the sextortion economy is supported by systems based in the United States.
