Nigeria Launches Real-Time Visa Overstay Monitoring System

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the initiation of a real-time monitoring system for visa defaulters in Nigeria. This system, disclosed during the first day of the 2026 sector retreat held in Abuja, is designed to track individuals who overstay their visas using an integrated operational center (IOC).

The technology will enable authorities to monitor the movement of travelers entering the country and identify those who remain beyond their valid visa period. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the system will strengthen the government's control over Nigeria's borders and maintain real-time records of travel to ensure compliance with visa regulations.

The initiative incorporates artificial intelligence and cybersecurity measures to improve migration and border management. The Nigeria Immigration Service will also launch nationwide enforcement operations against foreigners who fail to regularize their visa status, encouraging compliance through an amnesty program that allows voluntary departure without penalties.
