São Tomé Presidential Election Vote Counting Underway

Vote counting is currently underway in the presidential election of São Tomé and Príncipe, a Central African island nation. The election features four candidates, including Nito Vieira d'Abreu, a member of parliament who is backed by former Prime Minister Patrício Trovoada.

To win outright, a candidate must secure 50% of the votes cast; if no candidate meets this threshold, a runoff election will be held on August 9. Jeudig Nascimento, the chairman of the National Electoral Commission, expressed concern regarding low voter turnout but did not provide official turnout figures.

São Tomé and Príncipe has a history of maintaining a stable democracy since adopting a multi-party political system in the early 1990s, characterized by peaceful transfers of power.
