Sultan of Sokoto Urges Peaceful Voting Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, urged Nigerians dissatisfied with their political leaders to utilize their voting rights in the upcoming 2027 elections rather than engaging in insults, particularly on social media. Speaking in Abuja during a meeting with the 11-member Council of the Wise from the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development, led by former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, the Sultan highlighted the constitutional right of citizens to remove elected officials through the ballot.

He encouraged support for leaders while in office and advised against inflammatory political rhetoric that could lead to violence. The Sultan reiterated the need for responsible political discussions and cautioned against the spread of false information on social media, which he previously labeled as a "terrorist organization." He welcomed the Council's efforts to promote peaceful elections and called for adherence to electoral laws by political parties and candidates.
