Shettima Applauds Nigeria's Digital Identity Transformation

On Wednesday, Vice President Kashim Shettima commended the ongoing transformation of Nigeria's digital identity ecosystem, calling the progress unprecedented. This statement was made during a courtesy visit from a delegation of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), led by its Director-General, Abisoye Coker-Odusote.

Shettima attributed the advancements to the reforms initiated by the current NIMC management, particularly the enactment of the NIMC Act 2026. He noted the transition from paper-based administration to secure digital governance and urged NIMC management to support the transformative efforts of the Director-General.

Abisoye Coker-Odusote congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the NIMC Bill into law, which she stated marks a significant transformation in Nigeria's identity ecosystem. She highlighted that the Nigerian Immigration Service now utilizes the National Identification Number (NIN) for passport issuance and renewals, emphasizing the importance of the new legislation in establishing a modern digital public infrastructure.
