Tinubu Signs NIMC Act 2026 to Boost Digital Identity

On Friday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2026 into law during a ceremony at the State House in Abuja. This legislation is designed to strengthen Nigeria's digital identity infrastructure, facilitating the harmonization of identity databases and enhancing the National Identification Number (NIN) system.

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, described the act as a landmark achievement that will improve inter-agency collaboration and bolster Nigeria's capacity to combat identity theft and financing of terrorism. Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu welcomed the presidential assent, emphasizing the act's alignment with the National Assembly's commitment to addressing evolving security and development needs.

The Director General of NIMC, Abisoy Coker Odusot, reaffirmed the commission's commitment to implementing the act's provisions in collaboration with relevant government institutions and private sector partners.
