NIMC Partners with Ministries to Enhance Digital Identity

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is intensifying efforts to expand Nigeria's digital identity ecosystem through a partnership with various ministries, including the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment. Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, Director General of NIMC, held meetings on Wednesday to discuss strategies for implementing the new NIMC Act 2026, which includes provisions for data protection and combating identity fraud.

The commission has enrolled 136 million Nigerians in the national identity database but acknowledges that millions remain unregistered. The partnership aims to mobilize grassroots efforts to ensure reliable identification data, crucial for effective governance and social inclusion.

The initiative also targets vulnerable groups, including women, children, and persons with disabilities. The new act empowers NIMC to work with security agencies to tackle identity-related crimes and enhance the security of the national identity database.
