Chawinga Pleads with Super Falcons Ahead of WAFCON Opener

Ahead of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations opener, Malawi's captain Tabitha Chawinga made a light-hearted plea to the Super Falcons, asking them not to inflict a heavy defeat on her team when they meet on July 28, 2026, in Rabat, Morocco. Chawinga humorously requested that a score of 1-0 would be sufficient, rather than a 5-0 loss.

The Super Falcons, who are the reigning champions and have won the tournament ten times, are drawn in Group C alongside Malawi, Zambia, and Egypt. The Nigerian team had a pre-tournament friendly against Ghana scheduled for July 18, 2026, in Casablanca, but it was called off due to unforeseen circumstances.

The Super Falcons are currently in training camp in Casablanca under head coach Justin Madugu, with players including captain Rasheedat Ajibade and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozi already in camp. The tournament runs from July 19 to August 8, 2026, with four semi-finalists qualifying automatically for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
