WAPP Calls for Urgent Reforms to Strengthen Power Market

During the 67th Executive Board meeting of the West African Power Pool (WAPP) held in Lomé, Togo, on Monday, Engr. Dr.

Sule Ahm Abdulaziz, the Chairman, emphasized the need for decisive action to strengthen governance institutions and accelerate the development of a reliable regional electricity market. He described ongoing restructuring efforts as strategic for the future integration of power in West Africa.

The meeting addressed the critical pressures facing the region's power sector, including the need for an integrated, competitive, and sustainable electricity system. Abdulaziz outlined three guiding principles for the reform process: maintaining WAPP's mandate, ensuring strong governance, and implementing realistic support measures.

He stressed the importance of financial stability and transparent resource management to enhance electricity trade and attract investment. Mr.

Addoulay Dia, the WAPP Secretary-General, noted the meeting as a milestone for governance reform and highlighted the need for clear directives to accelerate regional energy integration.
