INEC Denies NDC's Claims on Candidate Nominations

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has responded to allegations made by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the removal of its nominated candidates for the 2027 elections. INEC's Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the Chairman, Adedayo Oketola, clarified that the commission does not have the legal authority to nominate candidates for any political party.

He emphasized that political parties are responsible for nominating their candidates, following the Constitution, the Electoral Act 2026, and related laws. Oketola stated that INEC provides a candidate nomination portal for parties to upload their candidates' details, which leaves an electronic record that can be audited.

He dismissed claims that INEC officials inserted names into the NDC's list and stated that any disputes regarding party nominations must be resolved under the Electoral Act 2026. Oketola also addressed the NDC's claim about unauthorized collection of Form EC9 by INEC officials, stating that such allegations can be verified against the commission's records.
