ADC Condemns Attack on Peter Obi in Edo State

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) issued a statement condemning an alleged attack on Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate, in Edo State. This incident follows previous threats made last year cautioning Obi against visiting the state.

The ADC expressed alarm over the political climate, describing the attack as a potential assassination attempt and a violation of democratic principles. They emphasized that such violence and intimidation tactics have no place in a democratic society and threaten the fundamental freedoms of citizens.

Yunusa Tanko, Obi's former campaign spokesman and national coordinator of the Obidi Movement Worldwide, raised concerns about the incident, which reportedly involved armed men trailing Obi during a formal declaration by Olumid Akpata, the Labour Party's governorship candidate in the last Edo elections. The ADC's statement highlighted the need for peaceful political engagement and warned that attempts to intimidate opposition figures could further endanger the safety of democratic participation in Nigeria.
