Abia Pensioners Demand Payment of Arrears from Governor Otti

On Monday, pensioners in Abia State, represented by the Abia Pensioners Forum and led by Coordinator Okey Kanu, warned Governor Alex Otti to fulfill his campaign promises regarding their entitlements. They criticized the state government for its failure to address the ongoing plight of pensioners and for not honoring agreements to liquidate pension and gratuity arrears.

The pensioners recalled Otti's promises made during his election campaigns in 2015, 2019, and 2023, expressing despair over his response regarding the expected payment of gratuity by July 2026. They emphasized the urgency of receiving their retirement benefits, noting that many pensioners have died without receiving these payments, which are crucial for their daily needs and health care.

The group also pointed out the perceived injustice of former Local Government Chairmen and Councillors receiving their entitlements while pensioners, who served for decades, were neglected. They urged the governor to prioritize their payments and ensure that their issues are not politicized.
