Kalu Promises Sustainable Financing for State Police

Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, stated that the National Assembly is working on sustainable financing for state police to avoid funding challenges.

During a briefing in Abuja, he assured that the proposed establishment of state police would not face financial obstacles. Kalu mentioned that the current administration, led by President Bola Tinubu, has significantly increased allocations to state governments to support the implementation of state police.

He noted that the National Assembly is exploring additional options to ensure financing does not hinder the success of the proposed police system. Kalu acknowledged concerns about potential political misuse of state police and insisted that safeguards would be built into the constitutional amendment.

He explained that the draft legislation would define the powers and responsibilities of state police and set national minimum standards. Kalu also addressed security concerns, stating that data shows a gradual decline in violence and that the Tinubu administration is committed to tackling insecurity with increased defense sector funding.
