Kalu Advocates for State Police Safeguards at Summit

At the 2026 South-East Regional Security Summit in Abuja, Deputy Speaker Kalu emphasized the necessity of safeguards for state police to prevent political repression. He criticized Nigeria's centralized policing structure, stating it fails to meet the demands of a complex federation.

Kalu referenced Executive Bill HB 2797, which aims to establish state police services for improved community-based policing and faster response times. He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his initiative to address deficiencies in Nigeria’s policing architecture.

Additionally, Kalu supported the government's plan to expand the Nigerian Army from eight to twelve divisions and recruit 28,000 personnel. He proposed the creation of a permanent South-East regional security coordination council and a shared intelligence platform.

Kalu recommended that relevant institutions develop an operational plan within 60 days, detailing responsible agencies, funding, timelines, and performance indicators, with a follow-up assessment in six months. He assured that the House of Representatives would support necessary appropriations and legislation to enhance public safety.
