Kalu Advocates for Accountable State Police Structure

On Thursday, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Special Ad-hoc Committee on Constitution Review, addressed the 2026 South-East Regional Security Summit.

He stated that the establishment of State Police must focus on accountability, professionalism, and public service, warning against its potential use as a political tool. Kalu highlighted the inadequacies of Nigeria’s centralized policing structure and referenced Executive Bill HB 2797, which aims to create State Police Services to improve local policing.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for initiatives to address structural deficiencies in Nigeria's policing architecture and welcomed the Federal Government's plan to expand the Nigerian Army and recruit additional personnel. Kalu stressed the importance of a collaborative approach to security, advocating for a regional framework that includes joint intelligence mechanisms and coordinated patrols.

He assured that the National Assembly would pursue constitutional reforms for State Police with safeguards against political abuse.
