WFP Calls for Comprehensive Response to DRC Ebola Crisis

The World Food Programme (WFP) has urged for a response to the Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that extends beyond healthcare interventions. WFP Country Director David Stevenson indicated that ongoing conflict, displacement, and severe food insecurity are exacerbating the crisis.

He stated that hunger is hindering affected families' ability to adhere to health protocols and support containment efforts. Stevenson warned that the Ebola outbreak is progressing faster than the humanitarian response, highlighting an urgent need for additional resources to assist remote and severely impacted communities.

He noted that while the agency is involved in constructing treatment centers, there is a critical need for more resources to expand food assistance and reach vulnerable populations. Addressing hunger in conjunction with healthcare is essential for ensuring that affected communities can effectively participate in the Ebola response and prevent further deterioration of the situation.
