Nigerians Face Data Issues Amid Telecom Operators' Denials

Nigerians are increasingly frustrated with telecommunications services as they report rapidly vanishing data and poor connectivity, which disrupts vital online activities such as banking, education, and job interviews. A viral video highlighted the plight of a job applicant whose data failed during an online interview, resulting in lost opportunities.

Subscribers allege that their purchased data bundles deplete inexplicably fast, leading to anger directed at telecom operators. Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), refutes claims of data manipulation, asserting that operators lack the incentive and technological means to steal data.

He explained that every megabyte consumed is recorded through standardized billing systems that are independently audited. The industry attributes the rapid data depletion to the advanced capabilities of modern smartphones, which run multiple applications in the background, consuming data continuously.
