ASUU Issues Ultimatum for Strike Over Salary Delays

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is threatening another nationwide strike despite a landmark agreement reached with the Federal Government regarding a new salary structure. ASUU President, Professor Christoph Piwuna, delivered a speech on Thursday at a public lecture in Bauchi State, reiterating the union's position and issuing a four-day ultimatum for the Federal Government to begin payment of the newly approved salary arrangements.

The agreement, which includes a 40% salary increase, is scheduled for implementation starting January 2026. However, delays in payment and the passage of the 2026 budget have escalated tensions, with ASUU members at the University of Lagos previously declaring an indefinite strike over non-payment of full salaries.

The Federal Ministry of Education, represented by Dr. Maruf Alausa, stated that the implementation process is underway, but ASUU remains concerned about the government's commitment to fulfilling its promises, citing historical delays and partial implementations.
