Awoniyi Aims for British Citizenship, Stays in England

Taiwo Awoniyi is anticipated to remain in England beyond the expiration of his current contract with Nottingham Forest in summer 2024, as he aims to qualify for British citizenship. Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in June 2022 for a club-record fee of £17 million.

His qualifying period for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) began in July 2022, making him eligible for ILR by July 2027, and he can apply for British citizenship after holding ILR for 12 months, targeting a British passport around July 2028. Seyi Olofinjana, a former Super Eagles midfielder who has guided Awoniyi's career since he was a teenager, stated that Awoniyi intends to stay in England until he secures his passport.

Despite facing injuries, Awoniyi has been a significant player for Forest, scoring 21 goals and providing five assists in 90 Premier League appearances. His notable performances include a brace against Chelsea in a 3-1 victory.
