Defence Minister Discusses Nigeria's Security Challenges

On June 12, 2023, Defence Minister Christoph Musa, a retired General, addressed the ongoing challenges of banditry and terrorism in Nigeria during a speech at an event organized by Covenant Nation in Lagos. He stated that the persistence of insecurity is partly due to support for criminal groups from individuals within local communities.

Musa noted that people often provide food, water, and information to terrorists and bandits, which he described as "oxygen" for their survival. He emphasized that security agencies cannot succeed without public cooperation and urged Nigerians to report suspicious activities.

Musa also warned against ethnic, religious, and political divisions that criminals exploit. He highlighted the importance of unity among citizens and the need for a collective response to strengthen security.

President Bola Tinubu's administration is committed to not surrendering to fear and will address the financing of terrorism and banditry. Musa concluded by stressing the necessity of modern security challenges extending beyond military force, requiring intelligence and citizen participation.
