FBI and DEA Withhold Records on Tinubu, Lawyer Explains

Wole Afolabi (SAN), a member of President Bola Tinubu's legal team in the United States, addressed claims regarding the withholding of records linked to drug trafficking allegations against Tinubu. Afolabi clarified that the FBI and DEA are not releasing certain information due to concerns about compromising their agents, confidential sources, and investigative methods, as protected under the Freedom of Information Act.

He stated that the US government has already released some documents but is resisting further disclosure. Afolabi rejected the notion that the withholding of records was to protect Tinubu personally, asserting that the focus is on safeguarding law enforcement operations.

He maintained that if US authorities had sufficient evidence to prosecute Tinubu, he would have been indicted. Afolabi also noted that being under investigation does not imply guilt and emphasized the presumption of innocence.

He declined to disclose details about the $460,000 forfeited to the US government in the 1990s, citing attorney-client privilege.
