Diri Appoints Dr. Peter Akp as Bayelsa's New Deputy Governor

On February 24, 2026, Douye Diri, the Governor of Bayelsa State, appointed Dr. Peter Akp as the new Deputy Governor, following the vacancy left by the death of the previous Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, on December 11, 2025.

Diri explained that his choice of Akp was based on his character, commitment, and fear of God, adhering to constitutional provisions that require a governor to nominate a replacement when the office becomes vacant. During the swearing-in ceremony held at the Executive Council Chamber of the Government House in Yenagoa, Diri expressed appreciation to the Bayelsa State House of Assembly for the swift approval of Akp's nomination.

He urged Akp to uphold the responsibilities of the office with integrity and empathy, emphasizing the importance of good governance for the prosperity of the state. The ceremony was officiated by Chief Justice Matilda Ayemiey, who also administered the oath of office to 18 permanent secretaries appointed by the governor.
