NAPTIP Addresses Criticism Over Delta 'Rape Festival'

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) responded to criticism about its lack of awareness regarding a 'rape festival' that occurred in Ozoro, Delta State, on March 19. A Facebook user, Chukwuneny Nweke, questioned why the agency was not informed about the cultural festival, which had been ongoing for a month.

NAPTIP acknowledged its limitations in monitoring all events but stressed the importance of community participation in combating human trafficking and gender-based violence. The agency condemned the alleged sexual assaults that took place during the festival, describing them as violations of human rights and forms of gender-based violence.

NAPTIP commended the Nigeria Police Force for their prompt response in arresting suspects, including community leaders. The agency reiterated its commitment to supporting actions that ensure justice for victims and prevent future occurrences of such crimes.
