Nigeria Urged to Prioritize Lifelong Education Initiatives

During the 297th inaugural lecture at the University of Ilorin, Prof. Ayodel Anthoni Fajonyomi highlighted the urgent need for Nigeria to extend learning opportunities beyond traditional schooling.

He proposed the creation of a Ministry of Lifelong Education to coordinate adult learning and vocational training nationwide. Fajonyomi argued for renaming the Federal Ministry of Education to symbolize a commitment to continuous learning and better collaboration across sectors.

He called for the strengthening of the National Council on Education by expanding its membership to include representatives from universities, the private sector, and civil society. Fajonyomi noted the establishment of Community Learning Centres (CLCs) to provide vocational skills and entrepreneurship programs, particularly focusing on health literacy for marginalized groups such as youth and women.

He emphasized the importance of partnerships with local institutions and private organizations to foster social cohesion and economic empowerment, advocating for legal recognition of adult education practitioners to ensure quality and effective workforce development.
