Nigeria Moves Safety Bureau from Aviation Ministry

The Nigerian government has made a significant decision to remove the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) from the Ministry of Aviation, effective July 2025, to enhance its operational independence and effectiveness in accident investigations. This decision was approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and aims to allow the NSIB to report directly to the presidency.

The move is part of a broader proposal to relocate the NSIB to the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, as discussed in a public hearing in Abuja by the Joint House Committee on Special Duties and Aviation. Dr.

Abubakar Kana, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, advocated for retaining the bureau within the aviation ministry to strengthen its legal framework. However, experts argue that the bureau's current placement hinders its ability to execute its mandate effectively.

The decision reflects a shift towards a more centralized oversight structure for transport safety in Nigeria.
