US to Halt Routine Visa Processing in Abuja by 2026

The United States government announced that, effective August 1, 2026, Nigerians will no longer be able to process routine visa applications at its embassy in Abuja. This decision is part of a broader restructuring of visa operations across Africa, intended to strengthen security screening, improve efficiency, and align visa processing with America's national interests.

The Department of State stated that this review is ongoing and aims to ensure that visa processing meets rigorous security and vetting standards. The restructuring will affect 25 US diplomatic missions across Africa, including those in cities such as Asmara, Bamako, and Windhoek.

Despite the changes, the affected embassies will remain open for other consular services, and previously issued visas will remain valid. Routine visa applications will be redirected to designated hubs in various cities, including Lagos, Accra, and Nairobi.

Existing visa restrictions and requirements will continue to apply.
