U.S. Shifts Visa Processing for Nigerians to Lagos

The U.S. Department of State has announced significant changes to the visa application process for Nigerians, effective August 1, 2026.

Routine visa processing will no longer occur at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja; instead, applicants will be directed to the U.S.

Consulate General in Lagos, which has been designated as the regional hub for Nigeria. This decision is part of a larger restructuring of U.S. visa operations across Africa, aimed at enhancing national security, standardizing screening processes, and improving operational efficiency.

The State Department previously outlined this realignment in July, identifying 25 African cities where routine visa services would be relocated to regional hubs. While the affected embassies and consulates will remain operational, applicants must now select the appropriate location, schedule appointments, and pay visa fees accordingly.

Those with existing appointments at the affected posts are advised to check their emails for specific instructions, particularly if they began their visa process in Abuja.
