US Troop Withdrawal from Nigeria Not a Security Breakdown

The United States has withdrawn approximately 200 military personnel from Nigeria, a move disclosed by General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, Commander of US Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa, in July.

This deployment, which began in February 2026, was aimed at supporting intelligence, surveillance, and counterterrorism operations in the Lake Chad Basin amid increasing security collaboration between the US and Nigeria against ISIS and other terrorist groups. Major-General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, clarified during a security briefing organized by the National Counter Terrorism Centre that this withdrawal should not be interpreted as a breakdown of the Nigeria-United States security partnership.

He emphasized that the relationship remains strong and beneficial, with ongoing cooperation in intelligence sharing, military training, and technical assistance. Uba urged the media and public to refrain from misinterpreting the troop drawdown as a collapse in Nigeria's security capabilities.
