US Troop Withdrawal from Nigeria Does Not End Partnership

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) of Nigeria clarified that the withdrawal of about 200 United States military personnel does not indicate a collapse of the security partnership between Nigeria and the US. Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, made this statement during a security briefing organized by the National Counter Terrorism Centre.

He noted that the presence of US personnel in Nigeria is linked to specific missions, and adjustments in their deployment should not be interpreted as a deterioration of bilateral defence cooperation. This clarification follows a report by The New York Times regarding the planned withdrawal, which coincided with comments from General Dagvin Anderson, commander of the United States Africa Command, who stated that much of the US forces had already been withdrawn but emphasized that this would not end cooperation with Nigeria.

Uba reiterated that the defence relationship remains strong and that areas such as intelligence cooperation, military training, and technical assistance will continue to be central to the partnership.
