Wike attacks Amaechi's political credentials ahead of 2027 election

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has publicly attacked the political standing of former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, describing him as lacking electoral strength in his home state and the broader South-South region. Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, Wike responded to suggestions that Amaechi could be selected as a running mate in the 2027 presidential election, questioning whether such a choice would serve any electoral purpose.

Wike's remarks centred on Amaechi's track record in electoral contests, arguing that his past campaign efforts have yielded limited results. The minister further suggested that if a major presidential candidate were to select Amaechi as a running mate, the decision would be based on considerations other than vote-winning capacity.

Wike also predicted that a joint ticket featuring former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Amaechi would not generate significant electoral impact in the 2027 race. The African Democratic Congress, the party associated with Amaechi, has rejected Wike's characterisations.

The opposition party accused the FCT minister of acting from a position of weakness rather than political confidence, arguing that his repeated attacks reveal anxiety about mounting opposition. The ADC also dismissed Wike's assertions that the 2027 Rivers State election outcome is already predetermined, contending that electoral results depend on voter choice and prevailing conditions at the time of voting.
