Wike Defends Judges' Housing Projects, Ensures Independence

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, defended the ongoing housing projects for judges in Abuja, stating that they will not undermine judicial independence. During an inspection of the projects, Wike dismissed concerns raised by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) regarding the potential impact on judicial autonomy.

He emphasized that the executive's role in constructing housing does not equate to interference with the judiciary. Wike criticized the NBA leadership for its inconsistent stance, particularly regarding its reliance on government support for its programs.

He reiterated that the projects aim to enhance the welfare and working conditions of judicial officers. Wike noted that the judges' quarters are nearly ready for commissioning, with 99% completion, while expressing dissatisfaction with the quality of the Court of Appeal project, which is 90% complete.

He assured that the administration would continue to monitor the contractors to ensure timely and quality delivery of the projects.
