Wike Defends Withholding 10% IGR for Teacher Salaries

On Wednesday, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, defended the withholding of 10% of the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) that was intended for area councils. Wike stated that this action was necessary to resolve ongoing salary arrears for primary school teachers, which have contributed to recurrent strikes and instability in the education sector.

He emphasized that no one should complain about the withholding as it is a temporary measure aimed at ensuring that teachers are paid their outstanding salaries. Wike outlined that the funds would be directed specifically to clear these arrears and improve the welfare conditions of teachers.

He also mentioned that the FCTA would implement a structured monthly payment plan until the liabilities are settled. Wike reiterated that the area councils lack the capacity to independently resolve this crisis, necessitating intervention from the FCTA to stabilize the education system.
