Nigerian Workers Demand Higher Minimum Wage Amid Economic Realities

Nigerian workers are demanding a higher minimum wage, citing the current N70,000 benchmark as insufficient due to the country's economic challenges. Following the lead of several states, including Imo, Lagos, and Rivers, which have increased their minimum wages, workers argue that the rising costs of living make the current minimum wage unsustainable.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma announced a salary review to improve worker welfare, while Lagos and Rivers States have also approved minimum wage increases. The National Minimum Wage Bill, signed into law in July 2024 by President Bola Tinubu, applies nationwide, covering the federal government, states, local governments, and the private sector.
