Otamendi Blames Rodri for Argentina's World Cup Defeat

Nicolás Otamendi, a veteran defender for the Argentina National Team, accused Spain's captain Rodri of attempting to influence the referee during their match in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Argentina lost the match 1-0 after extra time, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal in the 106th minute.

Otamendi noted that Rodri had been "crying all week" about the officiating. The match saw five Argentine players receive yellow cards, and Enzo Fernández was sent off in the 93rd minute after accumulating two yellow cards.

Otamendi's comments also referenced a scuffle that occurred post-match involving players from both teams, including Nahuel Molina and Leandro Paredes confronting Rodri. Aymeric Laporte, a former teammate of Otamendi's at Manchester City, was criticized for his remarks about the officiating, which Otamendi deemed inappropriate.
