Kaduna State Targets Universal Water Access by 2026

On World Water Day, Kaduna State announced significant reforms in its water sector aimed at achieving universal access by 2026. Governor Uba Sani's administration, represented by Malam Maiyaki, disclosed that these reforms are designed to improve the quality of life for residents by enhancing water supply and sanitation services.

Approximately 1.5 million residents are expected to benefit from improved water, sanitation, and hygiene services. The government has declared a state of emergency in the water sector for 2023, which includes addressing a backlog of 900 million naira in salary arrears owed to staff of the Kaduna State Water Corporation.

The state is procuring 1,300 metric tons of water treatment chemicals valued at 1.5 billion naira, with plans to rehabilitate major water facilities across various towns. The initiative aims to increase water production capacity significantly and includes expanding pipeline networks and constructing new reservoirs to ensure efficient water distribution.
