President Tinubu Confirms IGP Egbetokun's Removal

A source within the presidency has confirmed the removal of Inspector General of Police Egbetokun by President Bola Tinubu. This decision was made during a meeting at the presidential villa in Abuja on Monday.

When contacted, presidential aides, including Benjamin Hundeyin and Bayo Onanuga, did not respond for official confirmation. Egbetokun, who was appointed as IGP on June 19, 2023, has been a subject of public debate regarding his tenure, which was initially set to end upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60 on September 4.

However, his tenure was extended due to amendments in the police act that allow for a fixed four-year term for the IGP. Sources within the police hierarchy suggest that a successor may soon be identified, with Tunji Disu being mentioned as a potential candidate.
