Tinubu Orders Egbetokun's Resignation as IG of Police

President Bola Tinubu ordered the resignation of former Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun amid multiple grievances that had accumulated over several months. Egbetokun was compelled to resign after failing to execute a presidential directive to withdraw 11,000 police officers from VIP protection duties, which were to be redeployed to combat issues like kidnapping and banditry.

He submitted his resignation letter on a Tuesday, citing family issues, although sources indicated that he had pleaded for time to complete his four-year tenure, expected to run until October 2027. The president's decision was influenced by Egbetokun's resistance to the withdrawal order and his opposition to the creation of state police, a key security reform championed by Tinubu.

The president's directive was reiterated in a Federal Executive Council meeting, emphasizing the non-negotiable nature of the order. The financial implications of the VIP protection scheme, which reportedly generated around N300 billion annually, were also a concern, as the withdrawal disrupted established income streams for the police.
