Yoruba Groups Warn of Political Backing for Terrorism

The Yoruba Democrat Movement and other pan-Yoruba groups have issued a warning regarding the rising terror attacks in Nigeria, alleging that political actors are backing these extremist elements as part of a broader agenda to destabilize democracy. This warning was articulated in a communiqué following a two-day conference held in Lagos, where the groups called on President Bola Tinubu to restructure the nation ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.

The communiqué, signed by General Secretary Aydm Popoola Ajayi and others, highlighted security concerns, particularly the introduction of improvised explosive devices in attacks, citing a recent incident in Kwara State that resulted in the death of a commercial driver and injuries to a nursing mother and child. The groups emphasized the need for immediate creation of state police and restructuring of Nigeria's security architecture to prevent further descent into anarchy.

They condemned any coup attempts, warning that such actions would exacerbate the country's crises and called for a fair power rotation to maintain national unity.
