Yoruba Groups Warn of Terrorism, Demand Restructuring

The Yoruba Democrat Movement and AEGI Alliance have issued a warning regarding a new phase of terrorism in Nigeria, calling for urgent restructuring before the 2027 presidential elections. This warning follows a two-day conference in Lagos, where they expressed serious security concerns, particularly regarding the introduction of improvised explosive devices, as evidenced by a recent incident in Kwara State that resulted in the death of a commercial driver and injuries to a nursing mother and child.

The groups allege that extremist elements are exploiting global tensions, particularly the crisis in the Middle East, to intensify attacks in Nigeria. They accuse political actors of backing terrorism to destabilize democracy and gain power.

The communique, signed by Aydm Popoola Ajayi and others, emphasizes the need for state police and a restructured security architecture to prevent Nigeria from sliding into anarchy. They also condemned any coup attempts, warning that such actions could lead to widespread armed resistance and further crises.
